Special Numbers

There are some special telephone numbers which don't conform to the usual format. Some examples are:

  • 999 and 112 - Emergency numbers to contact the Police, Fire Service, Ambulance Service, Coastguard and Mountain Rescue
  • 100 - The Operator
  • 101 - Police Non-Emergency Number
  • 111 - NHS 111 for fast medical help but not an emergency (England and Scotland only)
  • 116XXX - Helplines for Services of Social Importance
  • 118XXX - Directory Enquiries
  • 123 - The Speaking Clock
  • 1471 - Last Call Return which gives the time and telephone number of the last received call
  • 1571 - Automated Messaging Service provided by some operators to take messages when a number is busy or not answered in a certain time
  • 0800 1111 - ChildLine (also available by calling 116111)
  • 0845 4647 - NHS Direct Wales (this number will be replaced by 111 in mid-2015)
