The UK directory enquiries service used to be reached by dialling 192, with the service supplied by British Telecom. In 2003 the directory enquiries market was deregulated and there are now over 100 providers, reached by dialling 118 plus another three digit number.
The new services charge in one of the following ways:
- Per-minute charge
- Fixed charge per call (limited number of searches allowed)
- Per-minute charge plus one-off fixed charge at the start
- Fixed charge for the first minute plus a per-minute charge for all other minutes
Some of the providers are:
- 118000 - Orange
- 118111 - TalkTalk
- 118118 - The Number
- 118247 - Yellow Pages
- 118500 - BT
- 118888 - 118 UK
Since 1 July 2015, users of 118 numbers have been required to declare their Service Charge (rather than quote the call rate charged by BT) and mention that the caller's telephone provider will add their Access Charge on top.
